After years of my love affair with my sketchbook, I discovered Illustrator and Photoshop. What an amazing tool for an artist! I can just hear my mother talking about how when she first started working as a commercial artist she had to do everything by hand. Fonts were chosen from a book, alterations to images had to be drawn in, calligraphy was written with pen and ink. I still very much appreciate the natural creativity that blooms from a pen or brush in the hand of an artist, but the flexibility and power of graphic design is extremely useful and fun to learn.
This is a folded book of famous female scientists entitled ‘If I see further, it is by standing on the shoulders of giants’. These are my giants. Each unfolding of a page reveals a new woman of amazing accomplishment, who built onto the successes of each other as scientists have for thousands of years.
This project started as a design for the background of my dad’s website, and turned into a fun exploration of brushes in photoshop! It’s still hard to tell which one was ‘painted’ and which one was made with images and effects.
